Policy Use of EPICS, GEP/GDT, VIP and Study Abroad Short Courses

The EEE Academics Committee has developed the following policy concerning the use of EPCS, GEP, VIP and Study Abroad short courses toward BSEEE degree requirements.

Students may take a maximum of 3 credits of EPICS, GEP/GDT or VIP total as an EEE Selective if the following conditions are met:

  • registration is at the 20000 or higher level
  • enrollment occurs over consecutive semesters
  • the semesters are dedicated to the same project
  • the project topic is approved in advance as appropriate for EEE

Up to 3 credits of a study abroad short course may be counted as an EEE Selective.  The specific short course must be approved as an EEE Selective in advance by the Academics Committee.

Students may also count EPICS, GEP/GDT or VIP credits as Technical Electives.  Registration for these credits can be at the 10000 level or higher, and do not necessarily have to be EEE focused.

Students may take EPICS, GEP/GDT or VIP for meeting Senior Design requirements.  The requirements are the same as for the EEE Selective except registration must be at the 40000 level.  See process for approval below.

In certain hardship cases students may earn 3 credits of EPICS, GEP/GDT or VIP in a single semester if approved in advance.

Under any scenario a maximum of 6 total credits of EPICS, GEP/GDT and/or VIP may be counted toward the EEE degree as EEE Selective, Technical Elective and Senior Design.

EEE Process for approving EPICS, GEP/GDT, or VIP project for meeting Senior Design Requirements

  •         The students must inform the Associate Director of Advising of their intention to request approval of an EPICS, GEP/GDT or VIP Senior Design project well in advance, such as during the registration meeting the semester prior to commencement of the Senior Design experience.
  •         The students must provide a description of the project and a brief summary of the history of the project.
  •         The project must be aligned with the EEE educational mission.
  •         There must be more than one student earning Senior Design credit within the project and these students must be working together as a team. The team can be multidisciplinary.
  •         If there is no one with satisfactory credentials in environmental engineering design already affiliated with the project as an instructor an appropriate EEE faculty member will be identified to serve as technical advisor to the project.
  •         EEE students must sign the MOU (see below).

If the above criteria are met the project is eligible for review and approval by the EEE Chair of Academics.

Memorandum of Understanding

between

Environmental and Ecological Engineering (EEE) Students completing Senior Design through EPICS/GEP/GDT/VIP

and

the Environmental and Ecological Engineering academic program

This MOU is for the 20xx-yy academic year. In addition to fulfilling all the requirements and expectations of the EPICS/GEP/GDT/VIP program for earning Senior Design course credit, participating EEE students will complete the following activities:

1) Each student will attend one Fall semester EEE 480 class session and present an individual technical talk of 10 minutes duration, plus a five-minute question period. The exact topic (related to the project), date and time will be mutually agreed upon after the semester commences.

2) During the Spring semester the team will attend one EEE 480 class session and present a short talk of about 15 minutes duration on the project scope and accomplishments to date. The date and time will be mutually agreed upon after the Spring semester commences.

3) The team will produce a professional and scholarly poster describing the project scope and accomplishments, and attend the EEE Recognition Night to present the poster. EEE Recognition Night is tentatively Thursday evening April xx, 20xx (5-8:30pm) the last week of the Spring semester. Optional: several mock poster sessions will be available to receive feedback on poster drafts.
