Changing Your Password

TL;DR: Place your mobile devices on Air Plane Mode. Check your Credentials manager/Keychain and remove all Purdue entries. Use CTRL+ALT+DEL on a domain PC to change your password. On off-domain machines, go to the Secure Purdue website to change your password. Passwords are limited to 8 to 16 characters.

A. Before changing your password:

  1. Put any mobile devices that connect to your Purdue account in airplane mode.
  2. On your computer, close any applications that are connecting to your Purdue account (i.e., Skype for Business and Outlook).

B. Change your password:

  1. If you are on a ‘domain’ computer where you use your career account to login (such as ):
    • On a College of Science or ECN managed Windows desktop, use the CTRL + DEL + ALT keys to pull up a system menu, and choose ‘Change my password’.
    • On a College of Science Mac, open your ‘System Preferences’ and then ‘Users and Groups’. Select your user account and choose ‘Change my Password’. Note: This does not work on an ECN managed Mac.
  2. If your computer does not use your career account to login (such as an unmanaged laptop), proceed to the SecurePurdue website to change your password (https://www.purdue.edu/securepurdue <- URL not clickable on purpose)

C. Update saved credentials (Your mileage may vary - you may need to delete these entries and allow them to be recreated)

  1. In Windows, from the Start menu, search for and open the ‘Credential Manager’. Update any ‘Windows Credentials’ for Purdue services to your new password. This updates saved printers, network drives, etc.
  2. On a Mac, open the ‘Keychain Access’ and update any saved credentials to your new password.
  3. Go into the ‘Settings’ of your mobile devices and update the password for your Purdue email account.

If you use a MacOS device, there's a chance that the updated passwords do not wind up working. In that case, you may need to remove and re-add your exchange account in your Accounts settings.

D. Get back to work!

  1. Re-open any applications that were closed in step 1.
  2. Turn off airplane mode on your mobile devices. They should resume synchronization of your email.
  3. Depending on the device, you may have to ‘Disconnect’ PAL3.0 and reconnect before it will resume your wireless network access. This is very dependent on the device and how it stores wireless network settings, so there isn’t a great rule of thumb, but typically, on mobile devices you will be prompted for your new password upon reconnection.

Internet Native Banner (INB) product users, there are limitations to the passwords you can use. These restrictions do NOT apply for users of the SelfService components. INB users should avoid the use of the following symbols  $ @ & ( ) < > = # ; commas, spaces, double quotes, and accents.

Safe special characters to use are  ! + { } | : ~ [ ] / \ % ^ * - _ ? single quotes and periods.
